Cape Coral City of Canals

Cape Coral is located near Fort Myers and is known as the city of canals. It has more than 400 miles of canals which lead to the Gulf of Mexico, making it a boater’s paradise. The city is on the Caloosahatchee River, which flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Cape Coral real estate was developed as a large subdivision of single-family homes through the Gulf American Land Corporation founded in 1957 by brothers Jack and Leonard Rosen.

Cape Coral real estate -city of canals

Promoted as a “Waterfront Wonderland” with more canals than the city of Venice, Italy, Cape Coral’s navigable waterways are home to thousands of boaters who store their boats in canals adjacent to their backyards. Manatees and dolphins are often seen in the nearby waters. Sirenia Vista Park has kayak routes to Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve, where birds wade amid mangroves.

This scenic wonderland is a city that was originally developed for rapid growth, with mangroves that were chopped down for development. Growth, however, was anything but rapid in the 1960s, when building halted in a drastic Cape Coral real estate bust. But decades later Cape Coral is exploding with growth with lots of new single family homes, condominiums and apartments.

Cape Coral real estateThe local Historical Society and museum traces the planning of the city, which is now the largest city in Lee County by population and square miles. The Cape Coral Yacht Club makes its home in a community park near the beach and pier on the Caloosahatchee River.

Cape Coral began as a planned community in the 1950s. With more than 400 miles of canals, beautiful waterfront homes make it a growing destination for boaters, golfers and those seeking a higher quality of life. It’s a popular destination for vacationers, many of whom own second homes for vacation home rentals or year round enjoyment.

Surrounded by water, Cape Coral also sustained hurricane damage as a result of Hurricane Ian in 2022, but has quickly seen plenty of reconstruction and rebuilding. This once small quaint coastal community has transformed into a larger suburban nesting ground for nature lovers, families and couples.

Although home prices rocketed higher during the real estate boom ushered in by record low interest rates and the global pandemic, housing prices are declining giving home buyers an opportunity to find some great deals. Negotiating those deals are what the Mike Colpitts selling team does best. Feel free to contact us for more information about Cape Coral homes and condos.
